Diamonds Can Be Cut into 13 Different Shapes or Styles
The cut of a diamond refers to the way the stone is shaped and polished, how the facets are arranged and how deep or shallow is the cut. There are many ways to cut a diamonds, but would-be stonecutters should be careful, many of the cuts have been patented.

As mentioned "the Cut" also refers to the shape of the diamond. But how does the cutter determine what shape to go for? Most often it depends upon how the actual molecules of the diamonds are arranged. If the crystal is an octahedron, it will usually be cut as a round brilliant, with the usual result being two round brilliants being cut from the original rough diamond. But if the octahedrons are flattend or there is a malformation in the stone - then other shapes are chosen - creating marquise or oval diamonds, for example.
The princess cut is also popular amongst diamond cutters: of all the cuts, it wastes the least of the original crystal - meaning a larger diamond for the consumer...

The modern round cut brilliant stone has 58 facets, or 57 if the tiny bottom facet, the culet, is omitted. The Princess cut is unique in that it's a square diamond with pointed corners. Many diamonds, even square and emerald cut diamonds will have rounded or cut-off corners. Such rounded corners are chosen for more than just aesthetic reasons. While diamonds are very hard, a diamond can still chip or be scratched, if it bumps against something at the wrong angle.
You may have read this in a romance novel or seen it in a movie: Someone scratching glass or a mirror with a diamond. Don't do it - you might injure your diamond!
An emerald shaped diamond is a rectangle cut with longer, flat facets. It's a good cut for a diamond that are exceptionally clear. An emerald cut diamond without such clarity can appear cloudy. Don't go back to that gem cutter!
The Asscher diamond is similar to an emerald shape, except it's square. Many observers think this cutting resembles a spider web when viewed from above.
Other diamond shapes are as their names imply. A pear-shaped or tear-shaped diamond is exactly that. It's an oval that's wider at one end (the bottom) and curves to a point at the other end. An oval cut diamond is a perfect oval.
To cut a diamond in a marquise-shaped is a good way to maximize the carat weight of a stone. It has longer and flatter cuts, while still highly faceted. Since the marquise comes in a variety of length-to-width ratios - it can use odd chunks or rough stones efficiently.
